How it Works - Assessing Fundamental Movement

Selective
Functional Movement
Assessment?

The SFMA is a movement based diagnostic system, designed to clinically assess 7 fundamental movement patterns in those with known musculoskeletal pain and is meant to be used by licensed health care providers. The assessment provides an efficient method to systematically find the cause of symptoms, not just the source, by logically breaking down dysfunctional patterns and diagnosing their root cause as either a mobility problem or a stability/motor control problem.

This systematic process allows us to clearly match our treatment intervention to your main problem. This model allows us to efficiently integrate the concepts of altered motor control, the neurodevelopmental perspective, and regional interdependence into our practice and provide you with better solutions to your problems.

What it does?

Stops the Chasing of pain.

When incorporating the results of the SFMA into our treatment plan we focus on the dysfunctional, non-painful patterns. It is the Dysfunctional Non-Painful (DN) pattern that will most often lead us to the source of a regional problem causing local pain. This is our starting place that takes us through a further logical breakdown process to determine the appropriate corrective exercise and treatment strategies. For example, the nagging lumbar pain that persists may have its origin in an asymmetry in an extremity pattern, postural and alignment issues outside of the lumbar spine, or lumbar spine stability and motor-control issues, which may include inappropriate lumbar flexion instead of hip hinging.
